The Party Harders are coming to the i_beta/event! They are the ‘enfant terribles’ of the Liege music scene, those Partyharders. Who put their mark on the Belgian festival summer of 2010 with ‘The Pope of Dope’ a co-production with flemish electro phenomena “The Subs”. The hit video of the song portrays the extraordinary life of band member ‘Mon Colonel,’ dressed up as a rock ‘n roll ‘St. Nicholas’, living in Wallifornia. Everything is completely over the top with PartyHarders, the clip, their style, though if one looks a bit further the rough edges of (Los Ange)Liège appear. That’s their source of inspiration, for their music and creative entrpreneurship, the negative image of their city and their part of Belgium.
Thursday May 12 and friday May 13 the third edition of the i_beta/event was held at Heerlen. Around 3000 visitors from the Euregio Maas-Rhine attended the event and all the free available activities. Upcoming bands like Audiofeel and Sungrazer will perform a special song that is iconic for this region: Autobahn. The audience will be asked to record the performances with their mobile phones and cameras. These will be uploaded to a central location where it will be edited as a video clip. This clip will premiere this very day in the Royal Cinema. Check out the result of last years crowd source video by Graund.
Theorem: Bands do not cross the border; we are focusing on our own country in pop music. The question is: how do you get bands to cross borders, or how to eliminate them?
The answer: working in another country for one week! Focusing on the following regions: Hasselt, Maastricht and Heerlen with its own pop-stages. This summer, three bands will work a week long at one pop-stage where they will be trained and coached (by some well-known instructors form the pop scene) in the specific qualities of that particular stage.

Exactly one week ago, Wednesday April 6, the preparations for the i_beta/event preview night were in full swing. With our curators Joao Evangalista & Bethany Betzler and attendees of the ‘Rustbelt to artistbelt’ conference in Detroit we had an interesting panel discussion on the transition of shrinking cities to a creative cities. Some thirty attendees in Heerlen participated in the video conference held at popstage Nieuwe Nor.
Detroit, a city similar to Heerlen when it comes to begin in beta, but also very different form Heerlen in size, governance and culture as we noticed duriung the discussion. In this context, a lot of interesting questions and answers were discussed; Can nostalgic create new things? How do we see transition in both regions? It was nice to see that people who live over more than 10.000 miles from each other have got similar thoughts about these issues. Thursday 12 May the first day of the i_beta/event we will continue our discussion at the Beta City Detroit Conference.
